Ray Thombs, Sr.

BATH Maine — Ray A. Thombs Sr., 70, died Saturday, Aug. 9, 2008, at the Hawthorne House Nursing Center in Freeport, following a long illness. His loving family was by his side.

He was born in Portland on May 3, 1938, the son of William and Rose Wallace Thombs. He attended local schools and graduated from Deering High School.

He continued his education at Elohim Bible Institute in Castile, N.Y., and the Glen Cove Bible College in Rockland. He enlisted and served in the Navy.

On Jan. 9, 1965, he married Lorena M. Springer in Coopers Mills.

He worked at Bath Iron Works for 20 years, retiring in 2001. In his spare time he enjoyed art, music, reading, ham radios and studying history. He was an avid Red Sox, Celtics and Patriots fan.

He was a member of the Woolwich-Wiscasset Baptist Church and a member of the National American Legion. He and his wife served as home missionaries at Children's Bible Camp in Hammonton, N.J., for three years.

Survivors include his wife of 43 years; a son, Ray A. and his wife, Tracey Thombs Jr. of Lewiston; three daughters, Rebecca J. and her husband, Douglas Oakes of Leesburg, Fla., Rachael F. and her husband, Sonny Hayes of Ruffin, N.C., and Ruth L. and her husband, Derek Cote of Portsmouth, NH; nine grandchildren; a brother, William and his wife, Beverly Thombs of Scarborough; and several nieces and nephews.

At the family's request, there will be no visiting hours. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 13, at 11 a.m. at the Bible Baptist Church on Beechnut Hill Road in Wiscasset. Burial will be private at the Maine Veterans Cemetery in Augusta.

Arrangements are by David E. Desmond & Son Funeral Home, 638 High St., Bath.
